Rural women - an empowering force

The Invaluable Contribution of Rural Women to Development.
2019 Theme: Rural Women and Girls Building Climate Resilience

The crucial role that women and girls play in ensuring the sustainability of rural households and communities, improving rural livelihoods and overall wellbeing, has been increasingly recognized. Women account for a substantial proportion of the agricultural labour force, including informal work, and perform the bulk of unpaid care and domestic work within families and households in rural areas. They make significant contributions to agricultural production, food security and nutrition, land and natural resource management, and building climate resilience.

Even so, women and girls in rural areas suffer disproportionately from multi-dimensional poverty. While extreme poverty has declined globally, the world’s 1 billion people who continue to live in unacceptable conditions of poverty are heavily concentrated in rural areas. Poverty rates in rural areas across most regions are higher than those in urban areas. Yet smallholder agriculture produces nearly 80 per cent of food in Asia and sub-Saharan Africa and supports the livelihoods of some 2.5 billion people. Women farmers may be as productive and enterprising as their male counterparts, but are less able to access land, credit, agricultural inputs, markets and high-value agrifood chains and obtain lower prices for their crops.

Structural barriers and discriminatory social norms continue to constrain women’s decision-making power and political participation in rural households and communities. Women and girls in rural areas lack equal access to productive resources and assets, public services, such as education and health care, and infrastructure, including water and sanitation, while much of their labour remains invisible and unpaid, even as their workloads become increasingly heavy due to the out-migration of men. Globally, with few exceptions, every gender and development indicator for which data are available reveals that rural women fare worse than rural men and urban women, and that they disproportionately experience poverty, exclusion and the effects of climate change.

The impacts of climate change, including on access to productive and natural resources, amplify existing gender inequalities in rural areas. Climate change affects women’s and men’s assets and well-being differently in terms of agricultural production, food security, health, water and energy resources, climate-induced migration and conflict, and climate-related natural disasters.

2019 Theme: Rural Women and Girls Building Climate Resilience

As the world faces a critical need to act against climate change, this year’s theme highlights the important role that rural women and girls play in building resilience to face the climate crisis. This will be a timely conversation that leverages the momentum garnered by the UN Climate Action Summit held in September 23rd in New York.

Globally, one in three employed women works in agriculture. Women collect biomass fuels, manually process foodstuffs, and pump water — 80% of households without piped water rely on women and girls for water collection. Rural women are at the forefront of the battle lines when natural resources and agriculture are threatened. For example, a quarter of the total damage and loss resulting from climate-related disasters from 2006 to 2016 was suffered by the agricultural sector in developing countries, significantly impacting rural women and girls' food security and productive potential.

One of the most effective ways to achieve progress on the threats posed by climate change is addressing gender inequality. Empowered women have greater capacity to respond to climate change and they play important roles in adopting low-carbon technologies, spreading knowledge about climate change, and urging action.

International migratory birds day

Few fascinating facts that we all need to know about migratory birds:
Why do they migrate??? Two reasons - for food or nesting or for both.

A migratory bird will keep migrating to the same location/ country year on year, via the same exact route.

Newly hatched baby birds will lead the entire group of migratory birds belonging to thier own species and family. The mystery unresolved! Scientists call it instinct inherited from thier parents.

We have destroyed thier environment, we have destroyed their food, water and thier habitat to live.

Birds from Siberia, migrate 10000 miles for several days to reach vedanthangal and Pallikaranai for thier nesting reasons.

Pallikaranai marsh is now IT and residential hub. Chennai lakes and ponds have been destroyed.

New and tall buildings, cell phone towers, strong Street lights are some reasons these migratory birds suffer and get confused to read thier desired destination!

All I request is they don't disturb us in anyway! Why do we ????  Such a fascinating phenomenon has been neglected and we have thrown plastics for them to live on!

It's high time that we join hands for protecting thier migratory route!

THE GIRL POWER -A BURDENING REALITY --  fighters story!
A girl's perspective of girls LIFE in India!

GIRLS WE ARE DEFINITELY UNSCRIPTED AND UNSTOPPABLE FORCE ♥️ Escaping from foeticide in our mom's womb, escaping from infacticide after birth, dealing with improper breastfeeding (strong myth girl children must not be breastfed for a longer time and more frequently), we survived on smaller portion of food (mostly leftover foods are provided), inadequate love and care from parents and society, denied education, unhygienic conditions... Etc..

Yes, We survived it all.. Thanks to our parents who decided for having us and bringing us up.
We survived through unwritten rules of society, parents demanded us to follow them.

We survived body shaming and gender abuses. "Oh, no, you have a girl child"😞. "Why is your daughter looking dark and stout?? Do something to make her skin look fair."
We survived sarcastic comments on our beauty status.

We survived through years of training given by our parents and society for marriage. We were denied education, we were denied nutritious meal because we were considered a burden, a buggage - that will leave thier parents in the name of marriage and will not support thier future.

"Do not speak much, put your head down and walk, sit properly, get yourself completely wrapped up in clothes, don't speak to other men, don't sit in front of men, don't raise your voice, be quiet," we survived when our voices were suppressed! The purpose of any Indian girl's life is marriage! (According to society )

We resisted all of them!

We survived beatings, abuse, disrespect, domestic violence in a country which worships and builds temples for women goddesses. Where Maa Durga is celebrated! (And only for ten days every year)

We survived, Discriminative treatment at home, "you are girl, your brother needs to eat well, not you".
We survived , starrs at our body parts by strangers on roads!
We survived, those cold nights sleeping outside of our homes during monthly periods. "You can not enter temple, you should not step into the kitchen."
We survived periods without restrooms, sanitary pads and proper nutrition.

We survived child marriage, being a child mother... Many of us reading this escaped from it, but our sisters have died while giving birth. Do you know why??? They were children, then, to give birth to another child!

Following unwritten rules many a times sounded easy. Many children have been pushed into slave trade in the name of marriage, yes, Haryana with lowest sex ratio can tell you stories of girl children suffering. Is it always right to follow the unwritten rules?

Society's unframed rule book has destroyed many girls' lives in our society. To men, parents and society, we are demanding for equality, equal treatment on par with a boy child. We don't want any previleges.

Men and society who feel , girls have been treated on par with boy, why do we observe International girl child day? Why beti bachao, beti padao scheme???

I personally have experienced many of these issues mentioned above! As a women, as a girl, it is not easy to survive the patriarchy prevalent in our society. With Indian constitution assuring equality, with a reality of fighting for 33% reservation @ Indian Parliament.

We survived it! We kept inspiring others, we will continue to, CUDDOS to all girls and women who survived all of these! YOU ARE A WARRIOR , A FIGHTER, WE FOUGHT UNKNOWN BATTLES WITH THE POWER OF COMPASSION.

Remember, No girl child -No women - No child birth - No next generation - No human race!

Request to our men and society - Nurture girl child, empower us, we will make you all proud. We need a place ,where we can grow and shine!

Thank you , Father for bringing up your daughters who can fight through and stand for other girls!
We salute parents like you, who empower thier girl child and teach them equality!

We opt for equality and gender nuetrality! Yes, I'm a feminist, but I don't hate men! We are here to fight for equality and not previleges.

International day of the girl child

Since 2012, 11 October has been marked as the International Day of the Girl. The day aims to highlight and address the needs and challenges girls face, while promoting girls' empowerment and the fulfillment of their human rights.

2019 Theme — GirlForce: Unscripted and Unstoppable

Nearly 25 years ago, some 30,000 women and men from nearly 200 countries arrived in Beijing, China for the Fourth World Conference on Women, determined to recognize the rights of women and girls as human rights. The conference culminated in the adoption of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action: the most comprehensive policy agenda for the empowerment of women.
In the years following, women pressed this agenda forward, leading global movements on issues ranging from sexual and reproductive health rights to equal pay. More girls today are attending and completing school, fewer are getting married or becoming mothers while still children, and more are gaining the skills they need to excel in the future world of work.
Today, these movements have expanded. They are being organized by and for adolescent girls, and tackling issues like child marriage, education inequality, gender-based violence, climate change, self-esteem, and girls’ rights to enter places of worship or public spaces during menstruation. Girls are proving they are unscripted and unstoppable.
This year, under the theme, GirlForce: Unscripted and unstoppable”, we will celebrate achievements by, with and for girls since the adoption of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action.

'Vita thesaurum' (VT) means life's treasures in Greek language!

Today, many of us experience loniless, depression, frustration , anger, anxiety, social inactiveness, insecurities etc.. Reasons might be several...but one underlying cause is we feel deprived of love and many a times we search for a person to lean on, being an altruistic being.

From One the authors of Team VT:
"I personally had undergone these emotions, most often people are not in a better position to empathise with us..
Almost ten years, many have trusted me and leaned on my shoulders, whenever they wanted a moral support...I wanted to reach out to many more of such people and came up with such an initiative.."

Remember your story can console and be a solution to many wounded souls and hearts!

Let's be the change, let us all take an initiative to empathize each other with an hope that eventually someone else can empathize with us.

Symptoms of anxiety and depression

According to the data published by the WHO, nearly 8,00,000 people die due to suicide every year, which is one person every 40 seconds

Suicide is the second leading cause of death among 15-29-year-olds globally

79 per cent of suicides occurred in low and middle-income countries in 2016

Suicide accounted for 1.4 per cent of all deaths worldwide, making it the 18th leading cause of death in 2016

Failure in examinations led to 2,413 suicides by students in 2016 -- or seven every day -- accounting for 25 per cent of student suicides

The National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) in its 2015 data made a shocking revelation that in India, one student commits suicide every hour. There is one suicide every four minutes in India.

UN World Habitat Day

Frontier technologies, such as automation, robotics, electric vehicles, renewable energy technologies, bio-technologies and artificial intelligence, can possibly transform the social, economic and environmental spheres. They offer the potential of better, cheaper, faster, scalable and easy to use solutions for every-day problems, including waste management. They also present opportunities for developing countries to leapfrog towards less efficient technologies and implement social innovations. In line with these possibilities, the New Urban Agenda calls for enhanced cooperation and knowledge exchange on science, technology and innovation that will influence the development of current and future urban areas in the world.

UN-Habitat’s Waste Wise Cities Campaign supports cities in monitoring their waste flows to transform them into valuable resources and opportunities. Has your city joined the campaign?

Last year some 80 cities around the world held events to mark World Habitat Day. If your community if making World Habitat Day or Urban October please post your event to our map, so others can see it.
